OVERVIEW: William Shaw and his family move their philanthropy through the William J. Shaw Family Foundation, which according to available tax filings, disbursed $252,000 in grants in 2017. The family particularly focuses on health and human services organizations through their foundation.
BACKGROUND: William J. Shaw graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received an M.B.A. degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Shaw worked at Arthur Andersen & Co. and later joined Marriott International, where he rose to the position of vice chairman. He is currently a general partner of Carlyle Group.
ISSUES:
HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Shaw sits on the board of trustees of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. The foundation has directed large sums to Suburban Hospital Foundation. Other grantees have included National Brain Tumor Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and American Heart Association.
Shaw’s daughter Amy is a lawyer and project manager for DVS Legal Services, a nonprofit organization that provides legal services to domestic violence survivors and families in need. She served as program manager for the Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation. The family has supported DVS Legal Services and Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation. Other grantees have included The Barker Foundation, which deals with adoption; All About U Adoptions; Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington; and Just Tryan It, which deals with childhood cancer.
EDUCATION: Grantees have included The Academy of the Holy Cross, where Amy graduated, and United Negro College Fund.
