SOURCE OF WEALTH: Salomon Brothers, Salomon Smith Barney

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Arts & Culture, Religious, Health & Human Services

OVERVIEW: William McIntosh and family conduct their philanthropy through the McIntosh Foundation, which available tax filings indicate, gave away a little over $840,000 in 2018. McIntosh supports schools, including Catholic and parochial schools. Another interest is the arts. Chicago and the Northeast are important regions of giving. Outside of Chicago, the family has ties to Boston, Minnesota and Los Angeles.

BACKGROUND: William Alexander McIntosh graduated from Xavier University. McIntosh spent a long and distinguished career with Salomon Brothers and Salomon Smith Barney, serving for two decades as managing director and as a member of the company’s executive committee. He retired after 34 years at Salomon and went on to teach finance as an adjunct professor at Howard University. He lives in Kenilworth, Illinois, outside Chicago.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: McIntosh is on the board of Fairfield University in Connecticut, where he is both a parent and a grandparent. The family also supports Chicago Jesuit Academy, where McIntosh is chair of the board, as well as Epiphany School, John Marshall Law School, St. Mary’s Missionary School in Minnesota, Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester, and Tulane University.

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre (ABT), where McIntosh is a trustee. McIntosh has been involved with ABT for years.

RELIGIOUS: The McIntoshes have supported Community of St. Sabina, St. Benedict the African Parish, and Catholic Extension, a “national fundraising organization which supports and strengthens poor mission dioceses across the United States.”

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Grantees include Northshore University Healthcare, MD Anderson Cancer Care Center, and Catholic Charities of Chicago.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family to continue to support its interest areas. Their giving may expand in the future with the new generation of McIntoshes.
