OVERVIEW: The Alan and Jill Miller Foundation funds grantmaking related to education, youth, health, Jewish, community, and global causes.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE: The Alan and Jill Miller Foundation was established in 1996. It was founded by Allan B. Miller, chairman and CEO of Universal Health Services, and his wife Jill. The foundation does not maintain a website, which restricts further information on its grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the Alan and Jill Miller Foundation funds grantmaking related to education, youth, health, Jewish, community, and global causes.

Alan Miller supports his alma maters University of Pennsylvania and College of William and Mary. He served as a trustee of the William and Mary Endowment Fund, and is a life member of the school’s President’s Council. The College’s School of Business is housed within Alan B. Miller Hall, and the Alan B. Miller Entrepreneurship Center opened in 2010.

Grants range from $1,000 to around $539,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $1.1 million. Past grantees include Jewish Relief Agency, Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, The Philadelphia School, Beyond Celiac, Wistar Institute, and Universal Health Services Foundation, which “provides short-term financial assistance for emergency food, medical attention, shelter, clothing, transportation, and other needs resulting from disasters for affected employees of Universal Health Services and their defendants.”

The foundation keeps a low profile but accepts proposals. It does not indicate a deadline or have a specific application form.
