SOURCE OF WEALTH: Theater Producer

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Arts & Culture

OVERVIEW: Stewart Lane and his wife Bonnie Comley move their philanthropy through the Stewart F. Lane & Bonnie Comley Foundation, which gave away $225,000 in a recent year. The couple are steady patrons of the arts, including arts programming at their alma maters.

BACKGROUND: Stewart F. Lane graduated from Boston University in 1973. He is a six-time Tony Award winning producer for productions including A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and Thoroughly Modern Millie. He is also the founder of BroadwayHD, a stage to screen production and distribution company expanding the reach of Broadway shows by making them available in cinemas, PPV, and online streaming.

Bonnie Comley graduated from University of Massachusetts Lowell and received an MA from Emerson College. She is the founder of BroadwayHD.com, an online streaming service that promotes and preserves live theatre, extending the reach of Broadway and Broadway caliber shows to anyone, anywhere. She is also a three-time Tony Award winning producer.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The couple have given at least $1 million to Boston University, where Lane sits on the board of overseers. They launched of the Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley Musical Theatre Fund, meant to enhance the School of Theatre’s music theatre curriculum. Additionally, Lane and Comley are benefactors of theater programs at UMass Lowell and Emerson College. Other grantees have included The Believe & Achieve Foundation, which “believes that quality outreach programs and caring adults will make a positive difference in the lives of youth.”

OTHER: The couple have supported The Actors Fund and Parish Art Museum. Lane has been involved on the boards of many major theaters in New York City. Support has gone to Temple Emanuel of Great Neck.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the couple to stick with established interests, focusing on the arts at their alma maters as well as the theater community in New York City.
