SOURCE OF WEALTH: Berkshire Hathaway

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Arts & Culture, Health

OVERVIEW: Stewart Horejsi and family conduct their philanthropy through the Horejsi Charitable Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, gave away $3 million in 2018. Focuses include education, the arts, and medical research.

BACKGROUND: Stewart Horejsi graduated from University of Kansas in 1962. He took over his family’s welding company. Horejsi began buying stock in Berkshire Hathaway for as little as $265 after reading an investment book. Horejsi still owns some Berkshire shares but has also put hundreds of millions into his own closed-end mutual fund. Horejsi lives in Arizona.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Horejsi has steadily supported his alma mater the University of Kansas, which his son John also graduated from. Other grantees include Northwestern University, UCLA Foundation, University of Colorado Foundation, and ASU Foundation, home to the Horejsi Family Scholarship. Various Horejsi family members are tied to these other institutions. Nicole Horejsi has been a professor at UCLA, for instance. Via a donor-advised fund, Stewart has supported select youth organizations in Barbados, where he has a home.

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Colorado Music Festival & Center, Missoula Art Museum, and The Phoenix Symphony.

HEALTH: Grantees include St. Francis Hospital, The Foundation for Blind Children, and Mayo Clinic.

OTHER: Various other grantees include Friends of Missoula Parks, Nature Conservancy of Arizona, Episcopal Parish of St. Barnabas, and Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church.

LOOKING FORWARD: Horejsi spreads his money around several communities. Expect this continue. John and other family members should be watched as the family’s giving shifts to the next generation.
