OVERVIEW: Steven and Lisa Tananbaum conduct their philanthropy through the Lisa and Steven Tananbaum Family Foundation. BACKGROUND: Steven A. Tananbaum is a graduate of Vassar College with a degree in economics. He worked primarily on high yield and merger & acquisition transactions in the corporate finance department of Kidder, Peabody & Co and spent over a decade at MacKay Shields. In 2000, Tananbaum founded GoldenTree, a firm which now has some $25 billion of assets under management.

ARTS & CULTURE: The Tananbaums have been listed in ARTnews Top 200 Collectors a number of times. They specialize in post-war and contemporary art. The couple mainly support arts and culture organizations in New York and Palm Beach, where the family has a second residence. Grantees include Norton Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, The Bruce Museum, Whitney Museum, The Met, and Foundation for Contemporary Arts.
EDUCATION: The couple strongly supports Tananbaum’s alma mater, Vassar. In 2011, the family established the Tananbaum fellowships at the school to support student summer internships. The Tananbaums have also supported Northwestern University, Lisa’s alma mater. Other grantees have included American School of Classical Studies, and University of Pennsylvania, where they have supported art exhibits.
JEWISH CAUSES: A major benefactor is UJA Federation. The couple has also supported Birthright Israel Foundation, American Friends of Israel Museum, Jewish Federation of Palm Beach, US Holocaust Museum, and Park Avenue Synagogue. It is worth noting that even within this grantmaking category, the couple prioritizes the arts.
HEALTH: Grantees have included NYU Langone, Mt. Sinai Icahn School of Medicine, and National MS Society.
