OVERVIEW: Stephen and Judy Pagliuca and family move their philanthropy through the JSJN Children’s Charitable Trust, which according to available tax filings, disbursed $3.64 million in grants in 2018. The Pagliucas’ giving centers around children, youth, and education. The family has also supported their schools, including Harvard. Boston is an important region of giving.
BACKGROUND: Stephen Pagliuca graduated with a B.A. from Duke University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1982. He was at Bain & Company where he advised Fortune 500 companies on business strategy and growth initiatives. In 1989, he joined Bain Capital, where he is currently a co-chair. He also serves as the global head of Bain Capital Private Equity’s technology, media, and telecommunications vertical and financial services vertical. Pagliuca is a co-owner of the Boston Celtics.
ISSUES:
EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Pagliucas are strongly interested in children. Stephen is president of the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, whose mission is to “extend the reach of the Celtics championship legacy into the community through programs that directly benefit children in need.” Judy Pagliuca, a technology investor, founded the Step Your Game Up program, presented by the Celtics Shamrock Foundation. The program aims to “identify at-risk middle school students, offer them agreements that link progress in school attendance and academic grades with incentives connected to the Celtics.”
Stephen is chairman emeritus of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC), another grantee. Other grantees include Make-a-Wish Foundation, Berklee College of Music, Boston Scholar Athletes Program, Perkins School for the Blind, Youth Inc., Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, and Harlem RBI.
Stephen and Judy have strongly supported their mutual alma mater, Harvard Business School, home to the Pagliuca Harvard Life Lab, a wet laboratory with co-working space for early-stage, high-potential biotech and life science start-ups founded by Harvard students, alumni, faculty, and postdoctoral scholars. Pagliuca has supported his undergraduate school, Duke, where he is a trustee. Three of the couple’s kids attended Duke, and two of them played for the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team.
OTHER: The Pagliucas have also supported MGH Cancer Center, Massachusetts Ear and Eye Infirmary, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Boston Symphony Orchestra.
LOOKING FORWARD: Judy has ties to Chicago, which may emerge as another regional focus of giving. The couple is still very much engaged in business, but perhaps more money will move out the door in coming years.
