OVERVIEW: Stephen Einhorn and his family conduct their philanthropy through the Einhorn Family Foundation, which prioritizes the greater Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. Funding priorities include “arts, education, and promoting liberty.” According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $2.5 million in grants from 2018 to 2019.
BACKGROUND: Stephen Einhorn earned a BA in chemistry from Cornell and an MS in chemical engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He went on to found Einhorn Associates, providing merger and acquisition services to chemical firms. In 2008, he established Capital West, a venture capital investment firm, with his son Daniel.
ISSUES:
EDUCATION: Einhorn broadly supports education in the Milwaukee area. Past grantees include the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, School Choice Wisconsin, Concordia University of Wisconsin and Next Door, a Milwaukee-based provider of early childhood education and care. Outside of the Milwaukee area, Einhorn has supported Turning Point USA, a conservative organization which aims to “educate, train and organize students to promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and a limited government.”
ARTS & CULTURE: The Einhorns have been strong supporters of Milwaukee Ballet and the Milwaukee Ballet II Program. Other arts grantees have included the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and In Tandem Theatre.
POLICY: The Einhorn Foundation’s grantmaking has supported several conservative policy and research institutes. Grantees include the libertarian Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, which promotes conservative public policy, the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank concerned with government, politics, economics and social welfare, and the Bradley Impact Fund, which aims to preserve “American freedom and values.”
HEALTH: The Einhorns have supported various health and disease-related organizations, such as the Prostate Cancer Foundation, After Breast Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD), the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias.
OTHER: The Einhorn Family foundation has also supported select Jewish organizations, such as Jewish Family Services and Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
LOOKING FORWARD: Einhorn’s philanthropy will likely continue to support educational and cultural programs in the Milwaukee area and conservative policy on the national level.
