Shelter Hill Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Shelter Hill Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of Paul Shiverick and his wife, Betsy. The foundation supports public, private and charter schools; teacher education and the development of open educational resources.

IP TAKE: This inaccessible and opaque foundation maintains a low public profile, and little is known about its specific funding initiatives. It does not maintain a website or provide a clear way for new grantseekers to reach out. This is going to be a tough funding nut to crack, but contact information has been provided below.

This funder does not accept unsolicited requests for funding and does not invite LOIs from grantseekers. While it does not appear to restrict its funding geographically, its grants tend to stay in either New York or Florida. Curious nonprofits will definitely want to network to get on this funder’s radar.

PROFILE: Established in New York in 2004, the Shelter Hill Foundation was established by former hedge fund manager Paul Shiverick and his wife Betsy. The Shelter Hill Foundation does not maintain a web site; little is known about its specific funding initiatives. The foundation prioritizes K-12 and higher education.

Grants for K-12 and Higher Education

The Shelter Hill Foundation does not appear to maintain clear funding priorities or a structured set of grants programs. However, tax records indicate that support for K-12 education is a priority for the foundation. Past grantees in this space include charter schools and networks, public school districts and private schools in the United States. The foundation has also invested in the Teach for America program and open educational resource initiatives at several universities and community colleges.

Other previous grantees include Boys Latin of Philadelphia Charter School, Tulsa Girls Art School Project, and Allan-Chase Foundation, to support middle school education. Additionally, Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart received $550,000 and Seton Education Partners was given $200,000.

Important Grant Details:
