FUNDING AREAS: Jewish Causes

OVERVIEW: Sheldon Goldman conducts his philanthropy through the Armonia Foundation. He supports select Jewish organizations, primarily in the Northeast. His annual grantmaking has been modest lately. According to available tax filings, Armonia awarded around $235,000 in grants in 2017.

BACKGROUND: Sheldon Goldman graduated with a B.A. from Yeshiva University in 1981, a JD from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 1984 and a Master’s in Tax Law from Georgetown University Law Center in 1985. He managed M&A efforts globally for Viatel, a Dublin-based telecoms operator, and later founded S. Goldman Advisors and S. Goldman Asset Management.

ISSUES:

JEWISH CAUSES: Goldman, via his foundation, has supported Northwestern University – Hillel, where he is chair of the board, as well as Young Israel of White Plains, Yad Avraham Institute, Jewish Community Center of Mid-Westchester, and religious institution Chevrat Pinto of New York City.

OTHER: Goldman has made miscellaneous gifts under $1,000 to New York and Massachusetts organizations such as Pathlight, University of Massachusetts Amherst, New York Public Radio, Innocence Project, and Brooklyn College.

LOOKING FORWARD: It is unclear how much money is waiting in the wings here but expect Goldman’s support of Jewish institutions to continue.
