SOURCE OF WEALTH: Spear, Leeds & Kellogg

FUNDING AREAS: Health, Education, Human Services, Religious

OVERVIEW: Robert and Audrey Luckow and family conduct their philanthropy through the Luckow Family Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $1.1 million in grants in 2018. The Luckows have given particularly strong support to Villanova University, and to The Valley Hospital in New Jersey, for personal reasons. The family has strong ties to New Jersey.

BACKGROUND:  Robert W. Luckow began working at 19 as a floor page and rose up to serve as CEO of brokerage giant Spear, Leeds & Kellogg, which sold to Goldman Sachs for $7 billion.

ISSUES:

HEALTH:  The Luckows have given millions to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ, including a $5 million gift to establish the Michael R. Luckow Heart Center. Luckow’s nephew and godson, Michael, passed away from a heart attack when he was in his mid-40s. Luckow was once chairman of the board of Valley Hospital Foundation, where he is an honorary trustee.

Other grantees have included Quest Autism Foundation, American Heart Association, Cure Breast Cancer Foundation, Wyckoff Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Adaptive Sports Foundation.

EDUCATION: The couple’s daughter, Stefanie, is a Villanova University graduate and the family has heavily supported the school. The university is home to the Luckow Family Endowed Chair in English Literature and the Luckow Family Endowed Fund for Scholarships in Education. Other grantees have included The Forum School Foundation and Academy of Holy Angels.

HUMAN SERVICES: The Luckow family has supported Homeless Solutions and Windham Community Food Bank.

RELIGIOUS: The family has supported local churches St. Elizabeth Church and Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, where Stefanie was married.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Luckows to continue funding their interest areas, with a focus on New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic.
