SOURCE OF WEALTH: JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup, Stone Point Capital

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Arts & Culture, Health, Jewish Causes

OVERVIEW: Robert Lipp and his family move philanthropy through the Bari Lipp Foundation, which, available tax filings indicate, gave away around $2 million in 2017. The foundation bears the name of Lipp’s late wife Bari. Lipp generously gives to Carnegie Hall. The family support schools with which they have a personal connection.

BACKGROUND: Robert I. Lipp graduated with a B.A. from Williams College, a J.D. from New York University School of Law and an M.B.A. from Harvard. He is the former chairman and chief executive of Citigroup’s Global Consumer Group, as well as a former vice chairman of Citigroup. Lipp also served as a director and senior advisor to JPMorgan Chase & Co., where he focused on international consumer banking and senior-level executive management development. In 2009, Lipp joined Stone Point Capital.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Lipp supports his alma mater Williams College, from where his son Jeff also graduated. Jeff has strong ties to Los Angeles and graduated from UCLA, which the family also supports via their foundation. Jeff is on the board of UCLA Health. Other grantees have included Crossroads School in Santa Monica, which Jeff and his wife Rachel support; LaGuardia Community College; and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Lipp also strongly supports Children’s Aid.

ARTS & CULTURE: Lipp was a trustee of Carnegie Hall, and has supported the institution with millions. He also serves as vice chairman of New York City Ballet, another grantee. Other grantees have included Central Park Conservancy, The Met Opera Association, Summation Dance Company, and PEN Center. It’s worth noting that daughter Wendy works in the publishing world.

HEALTH: Bari passed away from cancer. The Lipps, via their foundation, have supported places like American Cancer Society, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Lipp and his wife Martha are also involved with Riley Children’s Foundation, the fundraising arm of Riley Hospital in Indiana.

JEWISH CAUSES: Grantees have included Wilshire Blvd Temple in Los Angeles.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family to stick with their established interest areas for now. Down the line, Lipp’s kids should be watched.
