OVERVIEW: The Ping and Amy Chao Family Foundation supports children’s health and health outcomes largely in East and Southeast Asia.

PROFILE: In 2005, tech entrepreneur Ping Chao and his wife Amy established the Chao Family Foundation in order to “[i]mprove the health and well-being of children in disadvantaged regions worldwide, and promote a spirit of philanthropy and awareness of nonprofit and service opportunities among Asian Americans as well as the younger generation in East Asia.” While it supports grantmaking around the world, it prioritizes giving to developing countries in East Asia, from China and Cambodia to Vietnam. 

Chao does not have specific grantmaking programs but supports a variety of health-related projects including those related to neonatal and maternal health, and children. Its grants range from $50,000 to $1 million, which are awarded over the course of a single year or multiple years. However, Chao also offers its grantees fundraising, consulting and training services.

Chao accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry and full grant proposals. It encourages grant seekers to contact staff in order to ensure that their work is aligned with its grantmaking programs. The foundation rarely makes grants to public organizations or those receiving 50 percent or more of its funding from the government.
