PROFILE: Established in 2005, the Pincus Family Foundation was founded by Philadelphia philanthropists David and Gerry Pincus. The late David Pincus was an American clothing manufacturer. The Pincus Family Foundation seeks to support “organizations and programs promoting children’s health, education, safety, nutrition, recreation and the arts locally and worldwide.”
David Pincus helped establish clinics in Harlem for children with AIDS, and similar clinics for children in South Africa and in the Dominican Republic. The late couple were also avid art collectors. The foundation recently gave a $1.35 million gift to love.fútbol to develop five projects in 2019, including two all-new community sports fields in Philadelphia located in in lower-income communities. Pincus also gave $10 million to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to endow the David N. Pincus Global Health Fellowship Program.
Grants range from $500 to $325,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $2 million. Past grantees include West Philadelphia Alliance for Children, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation (home to the David N. Pincus Global Health Fellowship Project), Temple University, Swarthmore College, Smith Memorial Playgrounds, and Community College of Philadelphia Foundation.
The foundation’s formal online application process begins with a letter of inquiry. Organizations whose letters of inquiry have been accepted will be invited to submit a complete grant application. Within 45 days of review, applicants are notified of grant proposal invitation status. Grant proposals are reviewed four times a year.
