PROFILE: The Peyton Anderson Foundation is based in Macon, Georgia, and was established to distribute funds from the estate of Peyton Anderson Jr. in his hometown and county. The foundation was established in 1989 and since then has distributed over $86 million to local groups in Middle Georgia. It seeks to “improve lives and meet the needs of the local community.” Anderson was born in Macon and worked at the local newspapers, later buying them and owning them for many years. During his lifetime, he served on many local and national boards. He left the bulk of his estate to the foundation when he passed away in 1988.
The foundation’s Program Areas include community development, education, health, arts & culture, and human services. This is a funder that prefers to support projects and programs rather than general operating support, although initial start-up funds are sometimes considered for local groups.
Anderson gives grantmaking priority to groups who have a strong presence in the Georgia counties of Macon and Bibb. The foundation does not consider out-of-state grant requests.
