SOURCE OF WEALTH: Goldman Sachs, Kiernan Ventures

FUNDING AREAS: Human Services & Health, Education & Youth, Arts & Culture, Environment

OVERVIEW: Peter and Eaddo Kiernan conduct philanthropy through the Peter and Eaddo Kiernan Foundation. Available tax filings indicate that the foundation dispersed $680,000 in grant funding from 2017 to 2018. The foundation lacks a website, which restricts information about grantmaking guidelines and strategies. Peter Kiernan is also heavily involved with Robin Hood Foundation. Other interests include education.

BACKGROUND: Peter D. Kiernan graduated with a B.A. from Williams College and received his M.B.A. from University of Virginia’s Darden School. He joined Goldman Sachs and made partner, working at the company for nearly two decades. He’s since pivoted to the venture capital world and founded Kiernan Ventures. Kiernan has also authored books.

ISSUES:

HUMAN SERVICES: Kiernan has sat on the Robin Hood Foundation board for more than two and a half decades, including once chairing the board. He steadily supports the anti-poverty organization. Kiernan is also past chair and former president of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, another grantee. Other grantees have included Newport Hospital Foundation, and Icahn School of Medicine.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Kiernan supports his alma maters Williams College and University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. The family also supports Saint Gregory’s School in the Albany, New York area. Kiernan’s late mother Mary was a founding board member of St. Gregory’s School for Boys, home to the Peter D. Kiernan Plaza. Other grantees have included Harlem Children’s Zone, and Jefferson Scholars Foundation, which “provides a full scholarship program benefiting select undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Virginia.”

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees have included Newport Film, and New York Botanical Gardens. The couple also appears to have an interest in historic preservation and have supported Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Landmark Foundation, and CCN Historic Building Preservation Foundation, which supports the historic structure which houses the Clambake Club of Newport.

ENVIRONMENT: The Kiernans also earmark funds for environmental organizations like Audubon Connecticut, Trout Unlimited, and Everglades Foundation.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect philanthropy to continue to track with established interest areas.
