SOURCE OF WEALTH: Wayzata Investment Partners

FUNDING AREAS: Environment, Education & Youth, Health & Human Services, Global

OVERVIEW: Pat Halloran and family conduct their philanthropy through the recently-founded Halloran Family Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded around $510,000 in grants in 2018. So far, his giving has largely centered around Minnesota.

BACKGROUND: Patrick Joseph Halloran received a B.S. in business administration from North Dakota State University and a master’s degree in accountancy from the University of North Dakota. He was a consultant at Arthur Andersen & Co. and a member of the Dean Witter Reynolds corporate finance department. Halloran has managed Wayzata Investment Partners since 1990 and oversees all funds.

ISSUES:

ENVIRONMENT: The Hallorans have supported Ducks Unlimited through their foundation.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Grantees include Orono Public Schools and Newborn Foundation, whose aim is to leverage “technology and innovation to save newborn lives, reduce disparities, and improve health outcomes for the newest, most vulnerable citizens.”

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: The Hallorans have supported Westonka Food Shelf and Pay It Forward Fund, “a non-profit organization that helps breast and women’s cancer patients pay basic living expenses while undergoing treatment.”

GLOBAL: Grantees include Friends of Ngong Road, which works in Kenya, and Esperanza International, “a Christ-centered NGO working to free families from poverty in the DR through financial and complementary services.”

LOOKING FORWARD: The Halloran family’s philanthropy appears to be just beginning. Expect Minnesota to remain a strong focus of giving. The family’s international giving is also important to watch.
