FUNDING AREAS: Jewish causes, Health

OVERVIEW: Nathan Low conducts his philanthropy through the Sunrise Charitable Foundation. His giving centers around the Jewish community in the United States and Israel. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded around $128,000 in grants in 2017.

BACKGROUND: Nathan A. Low graduated with an A.B. from Harvard College in 1982. He worked at Salomon Brothers and Bear Stearns. He later founded Sunrise Financial Group and Sunrise Israel Tech, a growth engine for Israeli startups.

ISSUES:

JEWISH CAUSES: Low has been an active in investor in Israel, putting his money behind some 70 startups. His philanthropy centers around Jewish organizations such as American Friends of Shalva Israel, New Israel Rabbinical College, Young Jewish Professionals, and Yad Avraham Institute, a Torah learning institute in New York City.

HEALTH: Low’s Sunrise Foundation has given support to several medical institutions in the New York area, including St. Luke and Roosevelt Hospitals, Beth Israel Medical Center, and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

OTHER: The bulk of Low’s foundation giving focuses on the Jewish community, but other grantees include the Investigative Project on Terrorism and Rett Syndrome Research Trust. Low directs small grants to some unidentified charities through his foundation.
