OVERVIEW: The Mildred Miller Fort Foundation supports education, health, hospitals, environmental protection and beautification, and human services needs in Georgia.

IP TAKE: This foundation lacks transparency and does not maintain a website presence. It prioritizes the city of Columbus. It tends to award grants in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for well-established groups with which it is familiar.

PROFILE: Established in 1992, the Mildred Miller Fort Foundation is a private grantmaking foundation in Columbus, Georgia. Mildred Miller Fort, a Columbus resident who passed away in 2005 at the age of 85, was the foundation’s primary donor. Local community members, including Attorney Alan F. Rothschild, Jr., of Page Scrantom Sprouse Tucker & Ford P.C., serve on the foundation board today. Grantmaking areas of interest include education, health, hospitals, environmental protection and beautification, and human services.

The foundation does not have a website to guide grant seekers. However, it regularly gives to Christian agencies and churches, local hospitals, shelter organizations, education groups, and the United Way. Past support has gone to the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, Chattahoochee Valley Jail, Chipley Historical Center, Georgia Organics, Historic Columbus, and the Georgia River Network.

Foundation grants tend to be between $10,000 and $100,000. However, the foundation has also awarded larger grants that meet or exceed $1 million. The foundation has been giving out over $3 million annually in recent years. Review the funder’s recent tax records to learn more about its local giving. The foundation’s giving is largely focused on Columbus, Georgia and the surrounding communities. Almost all grants stay in Columbus with an occasional exception of Atlanta, Troy, Athens, and Phenix City in Alabama.

But according to tax records, this foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from local nonprofits. Grant seekers should address applications to the attention of Alan F. Rothschild, Jr. and submit the required documents via mail. There are no submission deadlines for grants.
