OVERVIEW: Michael Lowenstein conducts his philanthropy through the Michael & Carol Lowenstein Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, gave away around $1.64 million in 2018. Lowenstein supports his alma maters, UPenn and Northwestern. He is also a steady backer of Jewish causes.

BACKGROUND: Michael Lowenstein graduated from the Hackley School in Westchester County, New York, and then University of Pennsylvania. He received an MBA from Northwestern University. He was a vice president of the Mutual Shares Corporation, an equity mutual fund in Short Hills, N.J., before going on to cofound Kensico Capital Management in 2000. 

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Lowenstein has supported his schools UPenn (including UPenn Hillel) and Northwestern. His late wife Carol also graduated from UPenn. Other grantees include Say Yes To Education and Yonkers Partners in Education.

JEWISH CAUSES: Carol Lowenstein had been active with her local synagogue and served on its board. The family have been steady supporters of a number of Jewish organizations. Grantees have included UJA Federation of New York, Facing History & Ourselves National Foundation, Birthright Israel Foundation, Temple Shaaray Tefila of Westchester, and Jewish Child Care Association of New York. Lowenstein has also directed money to a donor advised fund at Jewish Community Fund.

ARTS & CULTURE: Lowenstein has supported Actors Fund of America and Jacob Burns Film Center. 

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Grantees include The Food Bank of Westchester, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Orphan Disease Pathway Project. 

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect Lowenstein to stick with his existing interest areas, especially his strong support of Jewish organizations.
