OVERVIEW: Michael Martino and family conduct their philanthropy through the Martino Family Foundation, which available tax filings show, gave away around $1.75 million in 2017. Martino primarily supports his alma mater, Fairfield University. Other interests include health and religious causes.

BACKGROUND: Michael Emil Martino graduated from Fairfield University with a degree in political science in 1985 and earned an MBA in finance from New York University’s Stern School of Business. Martino began his investment career at Oppenheimer & Company where he was responsible for risk arbitrage research. He went on to cofound Mason Capital Management in 2000.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Martino supports his alma mater Fairfield University. Other grantees include Duke University, St. Luke’s School, Inner-City Scholarship Fund, and Boys Town, a “nonprofit providing life-changing care to children, families and communities.”

HEALTH: Martino’s health philanthropy appears to center around cancer: he supports Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and American Cancer Society.

POLICY: Grantees include American Enterprise Institute and the Federalist Society.

RELIGIOUS: Martino has supported St. Aloysius Church, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Francis of Assisi, and Annual Catholic Appeal.

OTHER: Martino directs steady money to Surfers’ Environmental Alliance.

LOOKING FORWARD: Martino is much engaged in business, but may increase giving in coming years. For now, expect him to stick with his identified interests.
