OVERVIEW: Michael Gross and family conduct their philanthropy through the Michael Gross Family Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded around $1.4 million in grants in 2018. Support goes to the family’s associated schools. Another interest is health, particularly pediatric health.

BACKGROUND:  Michael Gross graduated with a B.B.A. in accounting from the University of Michigan and an M.M. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Gross is a founder and former senior partner of Apollo Management. He joined Solar Senior Capital, where he serves as CEO.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Michael Gross supports alma maters University of Michigan and Northwestern University. The couple has also supported Viki’s school, UPenn. Other grantees include Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Cornell University, Trinity School, and Kitchen Community, which builds Learning Gardens in schools around the country.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: The Grosses serve as co-chairs of Mt. Sinai’s Children’s Center Foundation. Grantees include Mt. Sinai Children’s Hospital, First Descents, a “charitable non-profit organization that gives a free outdoor adventure experience trip to young adults who are fighting cancer,” Challenged Athletes Foundation, and Alzheimer’s Association.

JEWISH CAUSES: The family has supported Youth Renewal Fund, which works with “a network of 28 high schools and two learning centers in disadvantaged communities in Israel,” and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

NYC COMMUNITY: Grantees include New York Road Runners and City Parks Foundation.

LOOKING FORWARD: Gross is still very much engaged in business, but perhaps more money will move through the foundation in the coming years.
