SOURCE OF WEALTH: Goldman Sachs, Empyrean Capital Partners

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Jewish causes, Health

OVERVIEW: Michael and Jodi Price conduct their philanthropy through the Price Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $194,000 in grants in 2017. The couple’s giving centers around the Los Angeles area. Price supports his alma mater UCLA.

BACKGROUND: Michael A. Price received a BA in economics from UCLA in 1983 and an MBA from Northwestern University in 1986. He spent 17 years with Goldman Sachs as a managing director and partner before going on to cofound Empyrean Capital Partners in 2004, serving as CEO until 2015.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Price supports his alma mater UCLA, including its Wooden Athletic Fund. The Prices have also supported Harvard Westlake School, John Thomas Dye School, Valley Sports Foundation, Camp Harmony, and Minds Matter, which works with high school students from low-income families.

JEWISH CAUSES: Grantees have included Wilshire Boulevard Temple and Builders of Jewish Education, the “only organization in Los Angeles wholly dedicated to supporting and enhancing Jewish educational experiences, from early childhood through high school, across the full Jewish religious and cultural spectrum.”

HEALTH: The Prices have supported The Hirshberg Foundation, which is “dedicated to advancing pancreatic cancer research and providing support to patients and their families,” UCLA Health System, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family to stick with their select interest areas, with a focus on the Los Angeles area. Also note that the couple once lived in New York.
