OVERVIEW: The Methodist Health System Foundation supports physical, emotional and mental health in Louisiana.

IP TAKE: This is an active health conversion funder in the state that is focused on the various aspects of local health but also one that is not typically open to receiving uninvited requests for funds.

PROFILE: Established in 2004, the Methodist Health System Foundation (MHSF) is a health legacy foundation based in Slidell, Louisiana. It formed upon the sale of Methodist Hospital and strives to improve the quality of life of its target population through strategic grantmaking and operating school-based health centers. The foundation aims to “support, develop and manage health-related programs and access to services that benefit the citizens of East New Orleans and beyond.” It funds local efforts for health, access to healthcare, healthy lifestyles, disease prevention and capacity building.

Grants for Public Health and Access, Diseases, and Community Development

The Methodist Health System Foundation funds health-related programs and services by collaborating with local and regional nonprofits that serve the local community. MHSF’s school-based health centers are at Chalmette High School and Nunez Community College, and these centers provide physical and behavioral health services. It makes strategic grants that fund specific programs and projects, some of which extend over multiple years. MHSF also awards small grants in the four-parish region of Orleans, St. Bernard, St. Tammany and Jefferson in the form of discretionary donations and sponsorships.

Past local grantees include Covenant House New Orleans, Ochsner Clinic Foundation and Liberty’s Kitchen.
