OVERVIEW: The McCune Foundation supports education, human services, humanities and civic needs in Pennsylvania.

FUNDING AREAS: Education, human services, humanities, civic needs

IP TAKE: This foundation is in its “sunsetting” phase and spending down all assets by October 16, 2029. That means that now is an ideal time to get involved with this local funder while still possible.

PROFILE: Established in 1979, the McCune Foundation is a family foundation based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is the foundation of Charles L. McCune, who was the director of the Union National Bank for 56 years. The foundation “supports nonprofit organizations that advance the quality of life for the people of southwestern Pennsylvania by fostering community vitality and economic growth to improve the region for current and future generations.” It funds local efforts for education, human services, humanities and civic needs.

The McCune Foundation has a broad goal of improving the quality of life in southwestern Pennsylvania by inspiring economic growth and community vitality. Since the foundation is spending all of its assets by October 2029, it is primarily supporting organizations with which it has already worked with in the past. In this phase, it is more likely to fund ongoing projects and programs rather than capital campaigns, new projects or requests for general operating support.

Grants range between about $10,000 and $500,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on the Pennsylvania counties of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Blair, Butler, Cambria, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland. The city of Pittsburgh is a primary geographic focus for the foundation. Past local grantees include the Pittsburgh Trust for Cultural Resources, United Way of Allegheny County and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant requests from nonprofits. It uses an online application portal to receive requests and provide further instructions to grantseekers. The funder’s distribution committee meets three times per year, and the time frame for new project considerations is usually several months. Direct general questions to the staff at info@mccune.org or 412-644-8779.
