SOURCE OF WEALTH: Director, Producer, Screenwriter

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Film Preservation

OVERVIEW: Martin Scorsese makes grants through the Scorsese Family Foundation. Grantmaking has been minimal lately. Scorsese also established The Film Foundation, which preserves and restores films.

BACKGROUND: Born in New York City, Martin Scorsese’s passion for films started at a young age. He attended New York University and in 1968 completed his first feature-length film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door?. He went on to direct iconic films such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and The Departed.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Scorsese supports his Catholic school Cardinal Hayes High School, in the Bronx. The school is home to the Martin Scorsese Media Center, a fully functioning television studio and editing bay.

FILM PRESERVATION: In 1990, Scorsese established the Film Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of motion picture history. The organization works alongside archives and studios and has helped restore over 800 films accessible to the public through festivals, museums, and educational institutions around the world. The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project has restored films from over 20 countries. The foundation’s free educational curriculum, The Story of Movies, teaches young people about film language and history.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect Scorsese to remain focused on film (no pun intended.)
