SOURCE OF WEALTH: KKR, Owl Rock Capital

FUNDING AREAS: Health, Jewish Causes, Arts & Culture

OVERVIEW: Marc and Jennifer Lipschultz move philanthropy through the Marc and Jennifer Lipschultz Family Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded around $1.7 million in 2017. New York City serves as an important region of giving.

BACKGROUND: Marc Lipschultz graduated with a A.B. in economics from Stanford University in 1991 and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1995. Lipschultz was with Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he focused on mergers and acquisitions and principal investment activities. He went then worked at KKR for more than two decades, and served on the firm’s Management Committee and as the Global Head of Energy and Infrastructure. Lipschultz went on to co-found Owl Rock Capital Partners.

ISSUES:

HEALTH: The Lipschultz couple recently made a gift to Mt. Sinai to establish the Lipschultz Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, “dedicated to better understanding of the underlying mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of cognitive function in humans.” They’ve been active supporters of Mount Sinai Health System for more than a decade and a half. Lipschultz has been on the board of Michael J. Fox Foundation since 2009, another grantee.

ARTS & CULTURE: Lipschultz was once chair of the board of governors of Bard College’s Center for Curatorial Studies, which the family has supported. He’s also chair emeritus of 92Y, another grantee.

OTHER: Grantmaking also addresses Jewish institutions like the Birthright Israel Foundation. Lipschultz has also been involved with American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research.

LOOKING FORWARD: In recent years, a full list of grantees has not been available on the foundation’s 990 forms, obscuring the full scope of recent giving. Perhaps the family’s giving will be more transparent in the coming years.
