Korsant Family Foundation

OVERVIEW:  The Korsant Family Foundation’s grantmaking includes support major environmental conservation organizations.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities. This funder does not accept unsolicited applications, preferring a proactive approach to grantmaking. It is a very modest funder, so this will not be a source of major funding for organizations looking to scale. This funder invests in a mix of national and hyper local organizations located in Florida.

PROFILE: Founded in 1996, the Korsant Family Foundation was established by financier Philip Korsant and his wife Catherine. Philip Korsant was born in Miami, Florida, and received a degree in economics from the University of Miami. He arrived in New York in 1970 and worked for Ziff Corporation, eventually serving as president. Korsant went on to found Korsant Partners, now Long Light Capital.

Grants for Environmental Conservation

Korsant serves on the board of trustees of National Resources Defense Council, which the South Florida based couple support. The Korsant Family Foundation’s grantmaking includes support for major environmental conservation organizations.

Past grantees include the Everglades Foundation, The Climate Reality Project, Wildlife Conservation Society, Sierra Club Foundation. The Korsants tend to support large environmental organizations, though they’ve also supported places like Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust in Connecticut.

Important Grant Information

Tax filings suggest the foundation has given around $175,000 annually in a recent year with many grants in the $1,000 range.

Given the foundation’s lack of transparency, it is unclear from its tax filings whether the foundation accepts LOIs or unsolicited applications; however, if left unstated, it is likely that it does not.
