SOURCE OF WEALTH:  Goldman Sachs

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Community

OVERVIEW: Joseph Zimmel and family conduct their philanthropy through the Zimmel Family Foundation. Zimmel’s philanthropy strongly prioritizes education, especially special education. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $758,000 in grants between 2017 and 2018.

BACKGROUND: Joseph R. Zimmel graduated with a B.A. Georgetown University and with an MBA from Wharton. Zimmel joined Goldman Sachs in 1979 in the mergers and acquisitions department, and became partner in 1988. He retired from Goldman in 2002. He helped start and currently serves as a director of four private companies: PURETi, Prizmalite Industries, Spiral Universe and nuTravel Technology Services.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Zimmel has adopted two special needs children, and the family supports special education causes, such as National Center for Learning Disabilities and Wediko Children’s Services, which “responds to the needs of children who face repeated obstacles to development due to emotional, behavioral, environmental, and learning issues.”

Zimmel has supported his alma mater, Georgetown, as well as Santa Clara University, Norwalk Community College Foundation (Zimmel is on the board), Yonkers Partners in Education, Eagle Hill School (Zimmel is on the board), Chess in the Schools, and McDaniel College, which Zimmel’s son Andrew attends.

COMMUNITY: The Zimmels have supported outfits in their Connecticut community, including Stanwich Congressional Church, Greenwich Emergency Medical Services, Connecticut Public Broadcasting, and Liberation Programs, a rehabilitation center.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect this funder to stick with his select interests for now.
