SOURCE OF WEALTH: Philadelphia Financial

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Jewish Causes, Arts & Culture, Health & Human Services

OVERVIEW: Jordan and Sarah Hymowitz conduct their philanthropy through the Hymowitz Family Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, gave away around $237,000 in 2018. The couple supports their schools, but other interests include Jewish causes and health. The Hymowitzes give a number of small grants, spread widely, primarily in the Bay Area.

BACKGROUND: Jordan Hymowitz graduated from University of Michigan. He worked for Montgomery Securities as a vice president and was a principal and senior analyst with Robertson Stephens. Hymowitz is currently a managing partner of Philadelphia Financial.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The couple supports Jordan’s alma mater, University of Michigan, as well as Sarah’s schools Swarthmore and UCSF, where they have funded the Discovery Fellows Program in support of Ph.D. students in basic and biomedical sciences. Sarah is vice president of protein sciences at Genentech. Other grantees include University School of Nashville, which Sarah attended, as well as Brandeis School of San Francisco, and St. Ignatius High School.

JEWISH CAUSES: The family supports their temple, Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco. Other grantees include Congregation Beth Tovim, Jewish Community Relations Council of San Francisco, Jewish Family & Children’s Services, and Hebrew Jewish College – Jewish Institute of Religion.

ARTS & CULTURE: The Hymowitzes are supporters of the American Conservatory Theater.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Hymowitz is on the board of Treatment Advocacy Center, which the couple supports. The couple has supported Family House, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, and San Francisco General Hospital.

OTHER: The Hymowitzes have made small donations to the Clinton Foundation, Family Scholar House, and Hanna Boys Center.

LOOKING FORWARD: Jordan and Sarah are young and still engaged in business, but their giving may expand in the coming years. Health and science research is an area to look for, given Sarah’s prominent role in the space.
