SOURCE OF WEALTH: Elliott Management

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth

OVERVIEW: Jonathan and Tea Pollock move their philanthropy through the Zegarac-Pollock Family Foundation, which available tax filings reveal, gave away $2.7 million in 2017. The couple strongly support schools with which they have a personal connection. They also give more modestly to assorted causes including health and policy.

BACKGROUND: Jonathan D. Pollock graduated with a B.A. in management, with a minor in English, from Curry College. He was an analyst at E.F. Hutton and Greenleaf Partners. Pollock joined Elliott Management in 1989 as an analyst, later becoming a senior portfolio manager. In 1995, he opened Elliott’s London office and for the next 14 years led the firm’s European and Asian businesses, opening additional offices in both Hong Kong and Tokyo. In 2009, Pollock returned to New York to become Head of Global Situational Investing and was promoted to Co-Chief Executive Officer in 2015. He works alongside Paul Singer.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Pollocks strongly support St. Hilda’s and St. Hugh’s School, an Episcopalian school in Morningside Heights, Manhattan. They’ve given seven-figure sums for a cafeteria renovation project at the school. Other grantees have included Americans for Oxford, Blair Academy (the couple are parents), Partnership for Educational Justice, Santa Clara University (the couple are parents), and The Aloha Foundation, whose “mission is to inspire people of all ages to learn, explore, grow and be their best.” The Pollocks have also supported Riverdale Country School in the Bronx.

OTHER: The Pollocks have directed the bulk of their philanthropy to educational causes lately, but they also support other institutions including Marine Corps—Law Enforcement Foundation, Manhattan Institute (Paul Singer chairs the board), MoMA, Melanoma Research Alliance, and Sea Mercy, which brings healthcare to remote nations.

LOOKING FORWARD: The couple’s recent giving has focused on a handful of outfits, particularly in education, but may broaden down the line.
