OVERVIEW: Jonathan and Mindy Kolatch conduct their philanthropy through the Kolatch Family Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, gave away approximately $3.6 million from 2017 to 2018. BACKGROUND: Jonathan Kolatch graduated from Columbia University and received his MBA from Harvard Business School. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1982 and held various positions in the credit arbitrage group, the high yield group, and the corporate finance department. He also made partner at the firm. Kolatch went on to found Redwood Capital Management.
ISSUES:
EDUCATION & YOUTH: Jonathan and Mindy have supported Kolatch’s alma mater, Columbia. Other grantees include NYU and Chai Lifeline, which helps children dealing with illness.
JEWISH CAUSES: The Kolatches are active in their local Jewish community in New Jersey and New York. Mindy is a teacher at Ramaz School, a Jewish Modern Orthodox day school in Manhattan. The couple are supporters of the school. Mindy is on the board of Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, which the family funds. Other grantees include synagogue Congregation Ahvath Torah, which has received strong support, as well as Hillel, East Hill Synagogue, Yeshiva University, and Moriah School.
HEALTH: Grantees include Holy Name Medical Center Foundation and Montefiore Medical Center.
OTHER: The Kolatches have supported Washington Institute for New East Policy. However, the Kolatches have directed seven-figure sums to a donor-advised fund at National Philanthropic Trust, making the full scope of their giving difficult to parse.
