OVERVIEW: The John D. & Katherine A. Johnston Foundation supports health and human services organizations that assist people with disabilities in Rhode Island.

FUNDING AREAS: People with disabilities, health, human services

IP TAKE: This is a good funder to know throughout the state of Rhode Island for groups that work with people who have disabilities.

PROFILE: Established in 1928, the John D. & Katherine A. Johnston Foundation is a grantmaking foundation that is focused on Rhode Island. The founders wanted to support children and adults who are physically disabled. John Johnston stated in his will, “It is my desire that each child be given the opportunity of acquiring at least a good grammar school education as well as to receive, if desired, the instruction usually afforded by a business or commercial school, and when practicable, that such child be taught some trade or useful employment.” Managed by Bank of America’s Rhode Island/Massachusetts office, grantmaking includes health and human services.

This funder prioritizes nonprofits that work to improve the lives of physically disabled adults and children. Educational, vocational, and job training programs receive the most support from this foundation. However, healthcare, recreation, and access to religious services are also foundation priorities. Past local support has gone to Shake-A-Leg, Child and Family Services of Newport County, Sail Newport, and the James L. Maher Center.

Foundation grants range between $2,500 and $10,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its Foundation Center grant history. Grantmaking is focused on Rhode Island but more specifically on the city of Newport. A majority of foundation grants are for one-year periods.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. The annual application deadline is July 1, and applicants can expect to hear back with a funding decision by November 30. Grantseekers must use the Bank of America online system to apply for a grant. Direct general questions to the staff at ma.ri.grantmaking@ustrust.com or 866-778-6859.
