OVERVIEW: John and Patricia Grundhofer conduct their philanthropy through the John F. Grundhofer Charitable Foundation, which according to available tax filings, gave away around $500,000 in 2017. Southern California, Montana, and the Midwest are important regions of giving. 

BACKGROUND: John “Jack” F. Grundhofer graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Loyola Marymount University, and an MBA degree in finance from the University of Southern California. He began his career in 1960 as a credit analyst and trainee at Union Bank in Los Angeles. In 1978, he joined San Francisco-based Wells Fargo Bank as executive vice president of the Southern California Retail Banking Group. Grundhofer is chairman emeritus of U.S. Bancorp, the parent company of U.S. Bank.

ISSUES:

ARTS AND CULTURE: John and Patricia Grundhofer are co-chairs of Palm Springs’ Living Desert Zoo and Gardens capital campaign, and gave a $3 million gift to the institution. The family has ties to Los Angeles and inland California. The Grundhofers have spent winters in Indian Wells, California, and summers in Livingston, Montana. Grundhofer is vice chair of the board of Palm Springs International Film Society. The couple support the film festival. Other grantees include Livingston Center for Arts and Culture, McCallum Theatre Foundation, and Palm Springs Air Museum. 

HEALTH: Patricia is on the board of Livingston Healthcare Foundation, which the family supports. Other grantees include Eisenhower Medical Center, Sanford Health, Masonic Cancer Center University of Minnesota, and CHOC Children’s Foundation. Patricia graduated from the University of Minnesota. 

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Grundhofers are heavily involved with the Horatio Alger Association. They have also supported Loyola Marymount University, St. Mary’s Catholic School, and Loyola High School of Los Angeles, among other institutions.

ENVIRONMENT: Grantees include Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, and Yellowstone Park Foundation.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the couple’s philanthropy to continue to track with these interests.
