SOURCE OF WEALTH: Prospect Capital Corporation, Prospect Capital Management

FUNDING AREAS: Veterans, Education, Environment

OVERVIEW: John and Daria Barry conduct their philanthropy through the John and Daria Barry Foundation, which is committed to improving opportunities, with a focus on veterans, education and the environment.

BACKGROUND: John F. Barry III. graduated with a B.A. in history from Princeton University in 1974, and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1978. He worked at Merrill Lynch during the 1980s. He is chairman and CEO of Prospect Capital Corporation, a leading provider of flexible private debt and equity capital to sponsor-owned and non-sponsor-owned middle-market companies in the United States and Canada.

Daria Becker Barry graduated from Wellesley College and also attended MIT. She is head of administration at Prospect Capital Management and has over 30 years of financial and investment experience.

ISSUES:

VETERANS: The foundation aims to improve access to treatment for critical health issues experienced by veterans. The foundation recently donated $2.5 million to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) to establish the John and Daria Barry Precision Oncology Center of Excellence at the Manhattan Campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System (VANYHHS). The Center address the clinical needs to veterans with prostate cancer in the New York metropolitan area and beyond.

EDUCATION: The John and Daria Barry Foundation recently pledged $2 million to the Inner-City Scholarship Fund to supporting Inner-City’s charitable mission benefiting low-income students attending Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of New York. The couple has steadily supported Brown University, their daughter Elizabeth’s alma mater. They’ve also created John and Daria Barry Foundation Fellow at UPenn. Overall, through this grantmaking category, the foundation focuses on helping children receive a quality education throughout all stages of their development.

ENVIRONMENT: The foundation participates on a local scale in the Northeast to help remove pollution from local rivers, reservoirs and bays.

LOOKING FORWARD: The couple have five kids including Elizabeth, who works at Prospect and should be watched carefully as grantmaking deepens down the line.
