OVERVIEW: The Macks conduct their philanthropy through the Christy and John Mack Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, provided $5.2 million in grant funding in 2017. Mack has strongly supported his alma mater, Duke University. Other interests include health, the arts, and the armed services.
BACKGROUND: John J. Mack was born in North Carolina in 1944. He graduated with a B.A. in history from Duke and started his career at Morgan Stanley in the early 1970s as a bond salesman. In 1993, Mack became president of Morgan Stanley and in the late 1990s, brokered a merger with Dean Witter Discover & Co. In 2001, Mack became CEO of Credit Suisse First Boston. He later rejoined Morgan Stanley as CEO, before retiring in 2012.
ISSUES:
EDUCATION & YOUTH: In 1999, the Macks gave $10 million to Duke University to establish the need-based Christy K. and John J. Mack Family Scholarship Endowment Fund, and to support Duke’s football program, the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership, student residential life enhancements, the Duke Annual Fund, and the Fuqua School of Business. Mack attended Duke on a football scholarship and is a trustee emeritus of the school. Other grantees include Emory University, Stephen Gaynor School, and GLSEN, which champions LGBT causes in K-12 education; the couple’s son is gay.
HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Through what was once known as the C.J. Mack Foundation, the family gave Duke $10 million for a new facility focused on integrative medicine. The daughter of a physician, Christy cofounded the Philanthropic Collaboration for Integrative Medicine, a group of philanthropists who promote integrative medicine. Other grantees include Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health, Venice Family Clinic, NY Presbyterian Hospital (Mack is a vice chair), and Healthcorps.
ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include Lincoln Center, Friends of the High Line, National WWII Museum, and Tribeca Film Institute.
ARMED SERVICES & LAW ENFORCEMENT: The Macks have supported NYC Police Foundation, Marine Corps Law Enforcement, and Lead the Way Fund, which deals with U.S. Army Rangers, among other organizations.
GLOBAL: The Macks recently gave a seven-figure gift to International Rescue Committee, where Mack is on the board, and nearly $1 million to The Clinton Foundation.
