OVERVIEW: Jerry and Kathleen Grundhofer and family conduct their philanthropy through the Jerry A. and Kathleen A. Grundhofer Family Foundation, which according to available tax filings, gave away around $1.3 million in 2017. Los Angeles and Chicago are important regions of giving. 

BACKGROUND: Jerry A. Grundhofer graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Loyola Marymount University, where he also later received an MBA, in 1979. He became the president of Star Banc Corporation and was chairman, CEO, and President of U.S. Bank National Association, a subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp. 

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Grantees include Chicago Jesuit Academy, Loyola High School, Stanford University, and Inner-City Scholarship Foundation. 

ARTS & CULTURE: The Grundhofers’ daughter Lauren works for the art sales and auction house Phillips and has also worked for Christie’s. She holds a master’s degree from School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the family supports Art Institute of Chicago via their foundation; Lauren is on the board. The Grundhofers have steadily supported Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Other grantees include LA Philharmonic, Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The Huntington Library, and Palm Springs Art Museum.

HEALTH: Grantees include Huntington Memorial Hospital, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and Eisenhower Medical Center. 

OTHER: The couple have supported United Jewish Appeal, Fisher House Foundation, and Desert Community Foundation in the Coachella Valley.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family to stick with their established interests for now. Lauren’s ties to Chicago may play a larger role down the line.
