SOURCE OF WEALTH: Artha Capital Management

FUNDING AREAS: Indian & Religious Causes, Education & Youth

OVERVIEW: Jaideep and Rachel Khanna conduct their philanthropy through the Jaideep and Rachel Khanna Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded around $1.6 million in grants in 2017. The family strongly supports Indian and religious causes via the foundation.

BACKGROUND: Jaideep Khanna graduated with a degree in accounting and economics from Muskingum University in Ohio and holds an MBA from Duke. Khanna was an executive director who managed pools of funds at Morgan Stanley Asset Management in New York and London. He went on to co-found Artha Capital Management, an emerging market fund based in Stamford, Connecticut, in 2002.

ISSUES:

INDIAN & RELIGIOUS CAUSES: The couple recently gave a seven-figure gift to the Ramakrishna Foundation in Los Angeles, which “helps people living in the United States give financial assistance to religious and spiritually-based organizations worldwide that promote religious harmony, that conduct cultural, educational, and service activities in light of the ideal of harmony, and that may run schools, colleges, orphanages, hospitals, and other establishments as part of their service activities.” Sri Ramakrishna was a 19th-century Indian mystic and yogi.

Other grantees include Pratham USA, where Khanna sits on the board, and the Vedanta Cultural Foundation, which promotes the teachings of Swami Parthasarathy, a contemporary philosopher of the Vedanta school.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Khanna is the founder and a trustee of Ashoka University, New Delhi. He also serves on the International Advisory Board of the Center for Advanced Study of India at the University of Pennsylvania. Grantees include University of Pennsylvania, Masters School, and Bryn Mawr College, where Rachel received her undergraduate degree. The couple have supported Room to Read, where Khanna serves on the New York Regional Board, and the Child Mind Institute.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Khannas to stick with their established interests. Rachel is a chef and holistic health counselor: perhaps some health philanthropy will develop.
