FUNDING AREAS: Health & Medical Research, Jewish Causes, Arts & Culture, Education & Youth

OVERVIEW: Jack Saltz and his family conduct their philanthropy through the Jack & Anita Saltz Foundation. Their giving centers around the New York City area. Available tax filings reveal that the foundation awarded $60,000 in grants in 2017 and did not make any grant awards in 2018. The Saltz family are major benefactors of Weill Cornell Medical College and various Jewish organizations

BACKGROUND: Jack Saltz keeps a low profile. He is a brother-in-law of Robert Belfer and has had big holdings in real estate. He also invested in Enron.

ISSUES:

HEALTH & MEDICAL RESEARCH: Saltz and his late wife Anita strongly supported Weill Cornell Medical College and the family continues their support. Anita’s brother, Robert Belfer, along with wife Renee, gave a $100 million gift to the college, which is home to the Belfer Research Building. Saltz and Anita endowed chairs in diabetes research at Yeshiva and Mt. Sinai, and the Diabetes Research Center at Yeshiva. The family helped establish an interdisciplinary study in diabetes Rockefeller University. Other grantees include Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, NYU Langone, New York Stem Cell Foundation, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

JEWISH CAUSES: The Saltz family has supported UJA Federation of New York, American Friends of Hebrew University, American Friends of Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, American Jewish Committee, and Hillel.

ARTS & CULTURE: Saltz has made donations to the American Museum of Natural History, The Met, and the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Grantees include Nightingale-Bamford School and Stephen Gaynor School.

LOOKING FORWARD: Saltz keeps a low profile but through the years has shown a commitment to medical research. His philanthropy sometimes aligns with the more public Belfers, which is something to keep in mind going forward.
