IP TAKE: This local funder maintains a low profile, but is still good to know because it supports varied interest areas.

PROFILE: Established in 1989, the Ida Ballou Littlefield Memorial Trust is an independent foundation in Providence, Rhode Island. Ms. Littlefield set up the trust to continue a legacy of giving after her death in 1988 at the age of 93. The foundation’s trustees are Citizens Bank of Rhode Island and Joachim A. Weissfeld, a local attorney in Providence. Grantmaking areas of interest include children and youth, education, the environment, food banks, health, the hearing impaired, hospitals, recreation, senior citizens, social and human services, the visually impaired and women.

The foundation does not have a website to guide grantseekers. However, it supports a broad range of interest areas in Rhode Island and beyond. The bulk of this trust’s funding prioritizes program support. It has supported Perkins School for the Blind, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Amos House and the Providence Community Health Center.

Foundation grants range between $15,000 and $50,000. Review the funder’s recent tax records to learn more about its local giving. The foundation’s giving is largely focused on the state of Rhode Island. Outside of Rhode Island, the funder also supports occasional causes in Boston.

It does not appear that this foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. The phone number to reach the foundation staff is 401-274-2000.
