OVERVIEW: The Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation supports human services, healthcare, education and prison reentry in Louisiana.

IP TAKE: This Baton Rouge-focused funder has an accessible grant program and welcomes contact with new and established nonprofits for its two yearly grant cycles.

PROFILE: Established in 1986, the Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation is a family foundation based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The founders were born and raised in Louisiana during the Great Depression and created a catalog showroom retail business called H.J. Wilson Co., Inc. They also founded an oilfield service business called Gulf Island Fabrication and dedicated a significant part of their wealth to this foundation. The foundation aims to “enhance Louisiana’s communities throughout the Greater Baton Rouge area by supporting philanthropic initiatives and programs that improve the lives of its citizens.” It funds local efforts for human services, healthcare, education and prison reentry.

Grants for Public Health and Access, Education, and Criminal Justice

The Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation began grantmaking in 2000. Its human services grantmaking addresses the prevention of hunger, homelessness, drug rehabilitation and resources for people with disabilities. Education funding focuses on reading and literacy programs, and grants go to charter schools, alternative schools and out-of-school-time programs. Healthcare funding involves care for the working poor and people without insurance. The funder’s prison reentry program area looks to reduce area to reintegration. Overall, the foundation programs, program, capital and bridge grants.

Past local grantees include Adult Literacy Advocates of Greater Baton Rouge, Big Buddy Program and Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless.
