OVERVIEW: Howard and Patricia Silverstein conduct their philanthropy through the Howard A. Silverstein Foundation, which according to available tax filings, gave away around $233,000 between 2017 and 2018. The Silversteins strongly support their mutual alma mater, University of Pennsylvania. Other interests include the arts and Jewish causes.

BACKGROUND: Howard A. Silverstein graduated with a B.S. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969, and received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1972. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1972 and was named a partner in 1980. He was chair of the Financial Institutions Group until 2011. 

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Silverstein and Patricia steadily support their mutual alma mater, University of Pennsylvania. Some of this giving has involved PennDesign, where Silverstein is an overseer. The school is also home to the Howard A. Silverstein, W’69 and Patricia Bleznak Silverstein, C’81 Holistic Wellness and Concussion Center. 

Other grantees include Nightingale Bamford School, Loomis Chaffee School, and Amherst College. 

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include Whitney Museum of Art, Public Art Fund, and Solomon Guggenheim Foundation.

JEWISH CAUSES: Grantees include Congregation of Emanuel, American Jewish World Service, UJA Federation, and Jewish Federation of Palm Beach. Silverstein has ties to Florida. 

HEALTH: Grantees include Mt. Sinai Health System and Health Leads. 

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Silversteins to stick with their established interests for now.
