OVERVIEW: Howard and Maryam Newman give through the Howard and Maryam Newman Family Foundation, which available tax filings show, gave away just under $1 million 2017 . Newman supports his alma mater, Yale. Other interests include health, scientific research, and the arts. 

BACKGROUND: Howard H. Newman graduated with a B.A. and M.A. in economics from Yale University and a Ph.D. in business economics from Harvard University. He spent 10 years in energy and financial services investment banking at Morgan Stanley & Co. and later worked for Warburg Pincus for more than two decades. Newman is chairman and CEO of Pine Brook Road Partners in New York and Houston, which he co-founded in 2006.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Newman was a president and a chairman of the Yale Alumni Fund. The couple recently gave a seven-figure gift to Yale via their foundation. Other grantees include Boston Scholarship Program, Communities in Schools, and Dancing Classrooms. 

HEALTH & SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH: Newman is a trustee of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, home to the Howard H. and Maryam R. Newman Chair in Plant Biology. Newman has no formal background in science but went to Cambridge with Salk scientist Tony Hunter. Maryam is a psychotherapist, and the couple’s giving has supported the National Alliance on Mental Illness and VIP Community Mental Health Center. Other grantees include City Harvest, Coalition for the Homeless, Northern Westchester Hospital, United Way, and Catholic Charities. 

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include American Museum of Natural History, Katonah Museum of Art, MoMA, Central Park Conservancy, NY Botanical Garden, and Film Society of Lincoln Center.

OTHER: The couple has supported Jewish outfits, including Congregation Emanu-El. Newman’s great-grandfather was a founder of Federation of Jewish Charities of Chicago and the Jewish Community Centers of Chicago. Newman has also supported Westchester Land Trust, Salvation Army, Doctors Without Borders, Aspen Institute, and Southern Poverty Law Center.
