SOURCE OF WEALTH: Warburg Pincus

FUNDING AREAS:  Jewish causes

OVERVIEW: Henry Kressel and his family conduct their philanthropy through The Kressel Family Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $501,000 in grants in 2018. Their giving focuses on the Jewish community, particularly in education and youth development.

BACKGROUND: Henry Kressel graduated from Yeshiva College, received an M.S. from Harvard, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Kressel was vice president at RCA Laboratories, responsible for worldwide research and development of microelectronics, power electronics, and associated software. He is a special limited partner of Warburg Pincus, where he has served as a managing director and senior advisor focused on the firm’s technology and communications investment activities.

ISSUES:

JEWISH CAUSES: Kressel runs the foundation with his two children, one of whom lives in Israel and works at Nefesh B’Nefesh, “a nonprofit organization that promotes, encourages and facilitates Aliyah from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.” Other grantees include Manhattan Jewish Experience, UJA Federation of New York, Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun, American Friends of Yeshivat Bnei Akiva, and Yeshiva University.

Kressel was Yeshiva University’s first alumnus chairman of the board. Along with his late wife Bertha, he established a chair in economics and research fellowships for outstanding undergraduate students at Yeshiva University.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Kressel family’s support of the Jewish community to continue.
