OVERVIEW: The Harry M., Miriam C. and William C. Horton Fund supports arts, culture, humanities, education, health, and human services in Rhode Island.

FUNDING AREAS: Arts, culture, humanities, education, health, human services

IP TAKE: Rhode Island grantseekers in nearly any nonprofit field should familiarize themselves with this locally-focused funder.

PROFILE: Established in 1948, the Harry M., Miriam C. and William C. Horton Fund supports Rhode Island communities. Born in 1878, Harry Horton was a lifelong resident of Rhode Island and partially owned the Queen Dyeing Company, which his father and oldest brother established in 1893. Horton specialized in dyeing yard and fabric processes to improve the look of finished textiles. He later became the vice president, secretary, and director of the company. Today, this foundation is managed by Bank of America’s Rhode Island/Massachusetts office. Grantmaking includes arts, culture, humanities, education, health, and human services.

This foundation memorializes the founders’ legacy of giving to public, charitable, educational, and religious purposes to local organizations. It gives to a wide range of local causes, as long as those causes are local. The foundation also prioritizes basic needs, food programs, shelter programs, and healthcare. In addition to program and project support, this funder will occasionally consider general operating support requests. Past local grantees include the Providence Children’s Museum, Star Kids Scholarship Program, College Crusade of Rhode Island, and RI Meals on Wheels.

Foundation grants often range between $3,000 and $10,000 each. Grantmaking broadly focus on Rhode Island.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. The annual application deadline is November 1, and applicants can expect to hear back with a funding decision within about two to three months after this date. Grantseekers must use the Bank of America online system to apply for a grant. Direct general questions to the staff at ma.ri.grantmaking@ustrust.com or 866-778-6859.
