PROFILE: The Gupta Family Foundation, established in 2001, seeks organizations that “[p]rovide focused intervention in the lives of individuals disadvantaged by poverty, disability, or discrimination—with the goal of helping them become self-sufficient.” Formerly known as the Apex Foundation, the Gupta Family Foundation does not designate specific areas of grantmaking focus. The foundation should not be confused with a foundation by the same name instead located in Grimes, IA. According to tax filings, the foundation broadly focuses its grantmaking on matters such as helping people with disabilities, access to education, women’s empowerment, disaster relief and global development.
Grants for Global Development, Humanitarian Aid, and Women
The foundation has previously given extensively for disaster relief and global development that benefits women and girls, but has significantly evolved grantmaking. Previous grants for disaster relief focused on the U.S. and Caribbean response to hurricanes. While it does not appear from tax filings that these focus areas have been prioritized in some years, this may change. However, grantmaking has evolved significantly to include work focused on education, specifically K-12 and Higher Ed for beneficiaries in both the United States and around the world. The foundation does not offer further grantmaking strategy here other than a track record of giving extensively to foundations that work to improve access to education around the world and in the U.S. Past education grantees include, Wheels Global Foundation, the Marshall Project, and Pratham USA, among others.
Important Grant Details:
Gupta Foundation grant amounts be as high as $1 million; however, the majority of grants fall in the $5,000 to $20,000 range. The Gupta Family Foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications and requests for funding from July 1 to September 30 and notifies approved grantees on March 31. Organizations located outside of the United States are eligible to apply for a grant; however, they must submit a grantee affidavit form along with their applications.
