OVERVIEW: The Greater Brewton Foundation supports health, welfare, education, culture, recreation and neighborhood improvement in the Greater Brewton area of Alabama.

IP TAKE: This funder supports a broad range of local needs but does not publicize its application process or make itself particularly accessible for first-time grantseekers. The foundation’s main interests are scholarships for local students and the Brewton Public Library.

PROFILE: Established in 1994, the Greater Brewton Foundation (GBF) is a community foundation based in Brewton, Alabama. This foundation is the legacy of Louise Garrett, a local Brewton resident who was a prolific painter known for painting landscapes, flowers, seascapes and local buildings. Garrett passed away in 2012, but the foundation still awards grants to local causes. Garrett’s family donated all of her remaining watercolor pieces to the foundation after her death. GBF funds local health, welfare, education, culture, recreation and neighborhood improvement projects.

The Greater Brewton Foundation has been awarding grants since 1995 and steadily supported local schools, the Brewton Public Library and city beautification projects. GBF funds a wide variety of projects in the area and also provides a way for other donors to address local civic needs. For example, GBF manages the Sandra Weaver Fund for the public library and several scholarship funds. Common grant recipients include public schools, government entities, healthcare organizations, food pantries, public safety providers, and nonprofits including the YMCA and Habitat for Humanity.

Grants range between about $5,000 and $10,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving in its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on the city of Brewton, Alabama and the surrounding areas in Escambia County, Alabama. Past local grantees include the Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy, Wheel Chair Ramp Ministry of First United Methodist Church and the Christian Community Benevolent Fund.

The foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits and posts invitations to apply for grants in the local newspaper. It usually awards grants annually and has a submission deadline of October 31. Direct general questions to the staff at 251-867-4881 or via online form.
