OVERVIEW: The Grable Foundation supports early childhood, public schools, out-of-school time, families and community in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

FUNDING AREAS: Early childhood, public schools, out-of-school time, families, community

IP TAKE: There are three opportunities per year to get involved with this focused funder that puts the needs of local children first.

PROFILE: Established in 1976, the Grable Foundation is a private foundation based in Pittsburgh Foundation. This is the foundation of Minnie K. Grable, the widow of Errett M. Grable, who was the founder and lifetime director of the Rubbermaid company. The Grables were longtime residents of Pittsburgh, and their foundation is mostly governed by family members today. The foundation aims to “help children and youth become independent, caring, contributing members of society by supporting programs critical to a child’s successful development.” It funds local efforts for early childhood, public schools, out-of-school time, families and community.

The Grable Foundation’s early childhood grants address the needs of young children before kindergarten. Public school grants fund K-12 education efforts and support teachers and staff. Out-of-school time grants fund after-school, summer and mentoring programs. The foundation’s family-focused grants include donations to play spaces and learning environments, while community-focused grants help build up local nonprofits and their leaders. It does not typically provide funding for administrative costs, fundraising events or efforts outside its home region.

Grants range between about $5,000 and $100,000. The funder typically makes between $9 million and $13 million in grants annually. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on the recent grants page of the funder’s website. Grantmaking focuses on Southwestern Pennsylvania. Past local grantees include 1Hood Media Academy, A+ Schools and Adagio Health.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant inquiries from nonprofits and uses an online grants system. The letter of inquiry deadlines are January 1, May 1 and September 1. The full proposal deadlines are February 1, June 1 and October 1 for nonprofits who are invited to submit full proposals. The board of trustees meets three times per year in March, July and November. Direct general questions to the staff at grable@grable.org or 412-471-4550.
