OVERVIEW: Good Samaritan, Inc. supports education, health, environment, children and youth in Delaware.

IP TAKE: This Delaware funder accepts unsolicited grant applications, but does not provide clear guidelines for applying. It appears to prioritize small- to medium-sized community groups throughout the state, so making a call to introduce oneself to its staff may be warranted. Contact information is provided below.

PROFILE: Established around 1946, Good Samaritan, Inc. is a private foundation based in Wilmington, Delaware. H. Sinclair Sherrill, Reverend Edmund K. Sherrill, II and Elizabeth. A. Nielsen are the foundation’s directors. Carroll M. Carpenter serves as the foundation president. It funds local efforts for education, health, environment, children and youth.

While Good Samaritan, Inc. does not have a website to guide grantseekers, tax records suggest that this funder focuses on local, grassroots organizations in a broad range of causes. Interests include leadership development, pathways to college and careers and watershed protection. Other foundation support has gone towards helping local children who are battling severe diseases and creating an endowed hospital chair for a learning and emotional assessment program. Meanwhile, healthy foods, teacher effectiveness, literacy, animal preservation and disaster relief programs have also received Good Samaritan grants. Overall, the funder does not typically provide grants for building funds, capital assets or conferences.

Grants range between about $10,000 and $100,000.  Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records.

Grantmaking prioritizes Delaware and, particularly, the city of Wilmington. Past local grantees include the East Side Learning Center Foundation, the Brandywine Conservancy and Make a Wish.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. Grantseekers should submit a written narrative report to Director Carroll Carpenter’s attention because there are no required forms or online system. Submit applications by April 1 for consideration at the foundation’s May meeting and by October 1 for the November meeting. Direct general questions to the staff at 302-654-7558.
