SOURCE OF WEALTH: Select Equity Group

FUNDING AREAS: Advocacy and Civil Rights, Arts and Culture, Education and Youth Development, Environmental Causes, Health, Human Services and International Development

OVERVIEW: George Loening’s firm Select Equity Group established its charitable arm, Select Equity Group Foundation, in 2000. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $3.6 million in grants to local, national, and international nonprofits in arts and culture, health, and human services.

BACKGROUND: George S. Loening graduated with a BA from Columbia University. He founded the Manhattan-based Select Equity Group in 1990.

ISSUES:

ADVOCACY & CIVIL RIGHTS: Select Equity Group Foundation’s grantmaking has supported Equal Justice Initiative, Prison University Project, and UC Berkeley School of Law’s Death Penalty Clinic.

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include New York Theatre Workshop, McCarter Theatre Center, Flea Theater, and Public Theater.

EDUCATION & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: The foundation has supported Children’s Aid, Harlem RBI, KIPP Foundation, Kent School, The Buckley School, The Spence School, Grace Church School, Young Audiences NY, and Blue Engine, which works to prepare “greater numbers of students for postsecondary success.”

ENVIRONMENT: Grantees include the National Resources Defense Council, Jane Goodall Institute, and Western Reserve Land Conservancy.

HEALTH: It appears that Select Equity Group Foundation’s health grantmaking has recently focused on cancer. Grantees include Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, and Visiting Nurse Service of New York.

HUMAN SERVICES & INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Grantees include Acumen,  Aziza’s Place, a children’s charity in Cambodia, Charity:Water, Robin Hood Foundation, and Edesia, whose mission is to “help treat and prevent malnutrition in the world’s most vulnerable populations.”

LOOKING FORWARD: The foundation’s grantmaking touches on a lot of different areas. Loening’s philanthropy outside Select Equity, however, is less clear.
